Hi there! It’s Monday and here begins what for now will be weekly posts on art in a brave new world and how we can accelerate our individual creativity. I’m exploring how I can be an artist now when the world I launched myself into back in the seventies no longer exists in the same way.
I began as an illustrator and have done hundreds of illustrations for various newspapers and magazines. That work is gone now as print media struggles to stay afloat in a digital world. Some of my illustrator friends are now painters, some do public art, some are print-makers. I turned to writing, an equal passion. I teach too and my book, The Confident Creative—Drawing to Free the Hand and Mind, is inspired by seeing my students open to their true creativity by drawing in experimental ways. What I liked about illustration was that it went immediately into the world. I think a lot about how I can make visual art with purpose now that old venues have disappeared.
It’s easy to see a new world is being born. It’s digital and democratic and beautiful. In the old world, we needed to be anointed by those in power in order to bring our work into the world. Art directors, gallery owners and juries decided whether or not our work would be valued or even seen. All of us bent ourselves sometimes into odd contortions in order to survive. We had children to feed. We tried to keep our work pure. But in our brave new world, the power is now in our own hands. Everyone can have a digital presence. We’re free!
For me, I see that my digital presence here as evolving art. WordPress is art—a virtual world of ideas and images and presence that we can all participate in. A place where our work goes instantly into the world—and at no cost! I’m letting go of old paradigms. The energy isn’t there for me but here. I’m inspired by a new generation of writers like Ev Bogue. They’re generating great new ideas and we can all participate in the conversation. We’re accelerating creativity. It’s not about finding our way in any more—we’re in already.
But let’s give thanks. The old world grew some grit. The struggle to stay true to who we are in the midst of pressures to conform let us know who we really are is beautiful and fine. All of us. It makes me think that all the divisive politics and wars are the last vestiges of power in the hands of the few that will now pass to we, the people. That, for me, is what art is now about—creating a new world, each by offering our unique selves to the world in whatever way we choose. And we’re going to need that grit.
More next week, if not before!

Hi Cat. I am so so happy to have found you! I used to be a young (!) designer and hired you many times because I so loved your work. That was back in the late 80s! (I used to work for Brownstone Group in Brookline, and Bird Design in Cambridge, among others…) And I used to live in Watertown, I remember walking to your house to pick up a piece you had done.
ANYWAY. I have since moved to Petaluma, California, I am no longer a designer, but struggling to regain my creativity! I went into our local bookstore and picked up your book. I bought it and am reading it now. And absolutely loving it. It is JUST what I needed. I had my doubts since books don’t usually help me but you are speaking exactly the way I have been craving to hear about creativity…. Thank you and I would be so happy to be part of your vision of creating a new world. It involves a mind shift and I am excited to hear more! YAY
Hi Cindy!
How wonderful to hear from you!! Of course, I remember you so well and all the wonderful work you gave me! I was so grateful for it and for the real pleasure of working with you! I can’t believe you happened on my book! I’m so happy you’ve found it helpful and, yes, I’m carrying on the conversation here on my newly invigorated blog. Look forward to your being a part of that, to sharing explorations and, yes, using our creativity in the highest possible ways! And, yes, it does involve a big mind shift.
Meanwhile, I hope you are enjoying California!

Hi Cat,
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the changing and emerging world of art and creativity…. It really does seem that now, faster than ever before is the time for creative self expression and freedom to express who we truly are…. Wonderful! How lucky are we to be living and experiencing these times….
Please let us know when you are back in London – I’d love to do some of your courses….

Hi Katrina! So lovely to hear from you here! Yes, it is wonderful to see how things are changing and so many people are seeking authentic self-expression. I just love it! And I love what you and Damien are creating in your little town of St Leonard’s, creating a center for yoga and healthy eating. And also that we get to see it all and read your inspirational words on the internet!
Maybe we’ll do an art class in St Leonard’s!!!

Hi Michel! So great to have you join the conversation here! Merci pour tes mots gentils! And for all your coaching inspiration! And thanks for the workshop good wishes! I love, love, love doing them! Cxx
Oh, sweet Cat! Sooo good to hear (read) your wide and willing voice. I think you must have done hundreds of illustrations for me alone when I worked at Time! So you’ve probably done thousands, really. How fun that you’ve also been reading Ev Bogue, and looking at the freedom of this digital frontier. I’m feeling a bit stuck with it myself, but I think that’s because I was trying to wrangle a living via service pieces out of it and found that I actually have no desire to do service *anything*. So, I’ve given it some distance and am writing analog and watching. Will Kitchen Garden Table ever revive? Perhaps. Meanwhile, I’m so glad to see you writing here and shining a light on so much possibility, to lead us out of the dark.
love you!

Hi Cat,
I absolutely LOVE your book and wish I could take your class… I think its exactly what I need right now. I am sending up secret prayers that you will come to the West Coast and offer a class here!
Hi Debbie! Thanks so much! Would love to come to the west coast to do a workshop! Maybe it will happen!
YES YES WEST COAST. (as a former designer, I don’t usually use all caps unless absolutely necessary)
I LOVE caps! West coast would be great! All suggestions welcome!
