Art Happening

My very first day back at the studio, after returning from holiday, I was asked to put together an art show for one of the art center’s trustees who is a real estate agent. He thought it would be fun, and I agree, to host an art show in a church which has been converted into several enormous and beautiful condos now called Bell Tower Place. I have a few funny feelings about living in a church myself but do think home is a sanctuary, wherever it is, and art is certainly something that can bring us to that transcendent place. So, all quite fitting. Anyway, I happily agreed. The rub is that I had only two weeks to put this together—the opening is now official—Tuesday, September 15th.
Out went invitations to 12 artists and back came 12 acceptances within a day. I’m very grateful to the artists for their enthusiasm. Everyone is due to bring their work to the spaces next Saturday morning. I’ll spend a little time figuring out where it all goes then hang it with my friend Matt on Monday. I’ve never put an art show together before and it was a lot of fun to think of how different kinds of art might work together. We’ll see how it all comes out.
This is a casual show, of course. It’s not designed to make a statement but it does interest me the different ways art we can get into the world. Where art goes, the energy flows! I love the theater of art—the night everyone comes to see it; the meetings and conversations and possibilities. I’ll be photographing the show, of course, and now we own a new FLIP video camera, I’ll video it as well and post some video here. The FLIP is a tiny camera that fits in your pocket but has amazing high definition imagery. It requires absolutely no skill at all to use it—my kind of camera. I haven’t yet figured out how to post with it but will do so shortly. Another thing for the to-do list.
Tomorrow, I finish the last bit of proofreading for my book, The Confident Creative, then off it goes to the publisher. The book is about finding our true creative selves through drawing and the last five months have been an intense period of work as I gathered the artists for the book, designed it and edited the text. It’s absolutely fantastic, I have to say, and much of the credit goes to the fantastic artists whose work is in the book. Some of them will be showing at the Bell Tower exhibit next week. I hope I can interview some of the artists in the next while and put the videos up on the site here.
After the book goes off, it’s into the next project—The Diary of An Artist of No Repute—a meditation on art and love. There are a few other things percolating as well but best not to say too much until these fledgling projects spread their wings a bit. Right now I’m sipping tea and making notes. Could all these amazing ideas come true? Can’t wait to dive in and find out!
There’s a nip in the air here in Boston. Fall is on its way after no summer at all. To me fall is the best season of all—so beautiful and full of new beginnings. Must feel that way from all those years of starting school. Anyway, I love new beginnings and hope that nip in the air is also quickening your pulse to do whatever calls to you!
