Kid Art

This week was tax week and I found myself making an intrepid visit inside my file cabinet to unearth a stack of receipts that needed adding. It’s a ghastly task but it was made a little lighter by the fact that my files were in a state of some disarray and amongst the receipts I discovered some children’s stories I’d written a while back and a few illustrations which you can see here. I’ve always rather loved this girl. She looks like she’s been around the block and seen a few things even at her very young age, like she might have a few thoughts of her own and not all of them charitable. She’s not unkind just a girl who has not averted her eyes and knows the human condition is, well, human. My kind of girl.
We worked like crazy at the art center this week sprucing up the hallway outside our studios. Basically this meant clearing away a bunch of stuff that had gotten dumped there by the theater and painting the bare cement floor. This part of the building is meant to have an industrial look but there was something about the cement that made the hallway a forlorn and unwelcomng space. We had a meeting a couple of weeks ago and the artists agreed that the space would be more inviting if it felt more like public space and so out came the paint.
We’re all very pleased with the result and it’s prompted a whole bout of spring cleaning in the studios—photos soon. But now I declare myself done with sprucing and cleaning. I went to the art store this afternoon and picked up some more boards for a series of paintings I want to do next week. And tomorrow I will get to work on opening an Etsy shop where I’ll be selling some small drawings. So much activity—must be spring! Hope yours is a good productive one too.

Cat,
I love these kid art illustrations! They’re so evocative–they bring up a whole host of wonderful, interesting memories from my own childhood. There’s something SO universal in them.

What an expression ! That little girl (with the odd ‘knowing look’) drawing reminds me so much of myself when I was a child. Now the only look I have is one of weary acceptance, often enhanced by make up and the right underwear.
